Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry
The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.
"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, aside from his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.
All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
