British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among thousands of British troops deployed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate militants who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
